T. Ray is a bad man who doesn’t have any reason for his actions other than plain-old-meanness.

  1. I disagree on that because even lily at the end admits that deep down, T. Ray had a good heart.

  2. "T-ray is a D-bag most of the time because that one lady died. He used to be a really nice dude but then he freaked out and turned into a looney after Lily's ma died." I said.

  3. T. Ray just feels alone in the world. He doesn't want to be a mean, inconsiderate person, no one does. He just doesn't want to be abondoned again like how Deborah did. That's why he searched high and low for Lily before finally finding her at the Boatwrights. You could tell when he saw how much lily looked like her mother with the whale-pin in her hair, all he cared about was not feeling alone in the world. His way of assuring himself companionship was defiantely flawed, but T. Ray wasn't a bad man, just lonely.

  5. Yea, sure. T-ray is a total bastard to his doughter all of the time, and it's under speculation wether or not it's justified? sure, his lady died. That's not any reason to punish her for everything that she does by making her kneel in grits. that'd hurt! for example, in the beginning of the story, he nearly beats her just for waking him up. no wonder lily ran away.

TL;DR - T-RAY is a mean guy that beats lily and has no reason to do this.

  7. T. Ray is a man that does have serious anger issues, but I feel like he does some what have a reason for his actions. In the end of the book when he finds Lily in Tiberon, he grabs her and she yells in defense "Daddy its me, its me lily." He had a stunned look on his face and said "you look just like her." He was refering to Lily's mother and his wife. She left him and he still did love her, but the book portrays the marraiage to be abusive. She left him, and Lily left him, but he did not want to loose her. In the end after August talks to T.Ray he realizes that Lily is better off not staying with him. So I say false, because he did have some legit reasons for his actions.

  9. This is false.
Sure in the beggining he seems that way, always punishing Lily for ridiculous things and appearing to not love her. But in the end of the story we find out that the reason T. Ray is always mean is because he's still heart broken about Deborah leaving him. He takes all his anger out on Lily. The reason he never became attached to Lily is because she reminds him so much of her mother. Everyone morns in thier own way and obviously Debroah leaving caused T. Ray lots of pain. It's apparent in the story that he has not over come that saddness and expresses it through the way he treats others.

i dont think that t ray is all bad. i think that he is just troubled from the fact that debra left him and later died. he is just having trouble dealing with it

  11. T-ray is not a good person. He takes it out on others just because Lily's mom died.

  12. T-ray is an angry old man. He is angry because his wife died and he was arguing with her when he lost her. He was angry already but now he is just bitter.

  13. When people go through horrible things they usually do horrible things. Lily is a constant reminder to T.Ray that his wife is dead. T.Ray has all this built up anger and doesn't know what to do with it so he takes it out on Lily. When Lily runs away T.Ray finds some form of relief. He no longer has to feel the pain. When he finds Lily at the Boatwright's he is taken back by how much Lily resembles her mother and revisits the pain of when she left him. He even goes so far as to attck Lily, thinking that it's Deborah. When T.Ray leaves Lily for the last time he says goodbye to the pain that has followed him around for years.

  14. At the beginning of the book I thought that T. Ray was a horrible man, but after finishing the book I learned that this is false. We do not know what happened before Lily shot her mother, but we do know that Deborah Fontanel told August that he was perfect to her and how much she loved everything about him. Obviously, T. Ray loved Debrorah or he would not have married her or stayed with her. When Deborah ray away T. Ray looked for her everywhere. I know this because in the end of the book T. Ray says, "I should have known...I looked for her everywhere I could think. And she was just right here. Jesus Christ, she was right here." T. Ray was in love with Debrorah if he searched everywhere to have her back in his life. Any person who loses someone that they love deeply would be in mourn for a long time, people deal with things differently; after Deborah ran away and eventually killed he became bitter, just like any other human would. I also know that T. Ray is not just a mean person, because he knew that Lily wanted to stay in August's house and August said that she would take care of her and put her in school, T. Ray knew that it was in Lily's best interest to stay so he was thinking of Lily before himself, and let her stay. Lily says, "I remember thinking that he probably loved me in his own smallish way. He had forfeited me over, hadn't he?" T. Ray has his reasoning for being bitter it is just hard to see past all of his anger.

    >> I don't think he is JUST bitter. he takes it all out on the only person he loves and forces lily to run away.

  16. T-Ray is a good man deep down but he doesnt show his true self. Even though he lost his wife this is no way to treat his daughter. I think part of the reason he treats her like that is because she shot the gun even though it wasnt her fault. Even though he loves Lily he also hates her at the same time.

  17. In the beginning of the book I did believe that T. Ray was just a bad man with out any reason for his actions other than plain-old-meanness. However in the last chapters of the book when he finds Lily and is trying to bring her home, he has an emotional melt down, he has a flashback of when his wife Deborah left and doesn't want to feel that pain again. I feel as though he became mean because she left and he didn't know how to react. In the end he ends up leaving Lily because he knows that she would be better off there, not because he doesn't want her.

  18. Yellow Sun: I believe that this post is not correct. Yes T. Ray is a mean father to Lily through out the book but in the end a little of his true colors finally come out. When T. Ray finally finds out that Lily has been staying with August and her sisters we then learn that he refers to Lily as Deborah in his mind. I believe that through out the book T. Ray takes his aggressions out on Lily because he "believes" that she is Deborah and has left him. He is mad that Deborah left him and can not come to face reality when he finds Lily at Augusts’ house that she is not Deborah. In the end Lily finally gets her father's attention by yelling, "Daddy" and T. Ray soon realizes that Lily is not Deborah. At first T. Ray is mad but then he decides that it would be the right decision for Lily to stay with August. T. Ray finally is trying to look out for his daughter and what is best for her.

  19. I think taht T. Ray wants to be good deep down on the inside. But he doesnt ever show that through out the story except a few times at the end of the story, like when she finds lily with Tiberon and grabbed her but when he notices its lily and not her mom he lets go. but earlier in the story many times does T. Ray grab lily and shake her with anger. Like when Lily argues with him that her mom didnt leave her, he grabs her and yells at her and leaves her in her room crying.

  22. I definitely agree with ladysuez93. T-Ray should not of done what he did it was very wrong the way he treated and raised Lily but I do agree that there was reason for his actions and thats because he lost his wife that he really loved and was in a really angry place now and when he grabs her at the end Lily has to shout out that its her Lily. He says she looks just like her and I think thats why he's been so mean Lily reminds T-Ray of her mother and T-Ray is still upset that Debora was leaving him and was now gone.

  23. I disagree, because at the first when his wife die, he just act alone, he donst know how to take care his daughter Lily.
I can understand that, I think its so hard when you lose someone,Its hard to talk about his wife, when Lily ask him about his mom, he just change the conversation or go away.
"My mother's name was Deborah. I thought tht was the prettiest name I'd ever heard, even though T.Ray refused to speak it. If I said, he acted like he might go stright to the kitchen and stab something"

  24. 32_Bitwonder. He was just bitter, trust me. He takes it out on Lily because he loves her but she killed her mother so there is a conflict of emotions.

  25. I Belive that T-Ray dosent really know how to parent due to the fact that no one ever tells him what he is doing is wrong. He belives that every thing he does is in the best interest of his child. I do not think that T-Ray is a bad man, I just think that he is a little missguided becasue he dosent have a wife to help tell him what is best for his daughter.

  26. Lily Taglof said that T. Ray's reason for his anger is fueled by his sadness about his wife Deborah leaving him. I agree with this. T. Ray is not a bad person he is just deeply sadened by his loss. At the end of the book we see T. Ray's true colors. He has to swallow his pride and choose to ither leave Lily with August or take her back home with him. In the end he does what is best for Lily and leaves her with her three new mothers. "it was all pride now,all pride. How could he back down?" T.Ray got over his anger and finally let it go.

  28. T-Ray is a mean old guy. He is depressed because her wife left him (well she died, but she would leave him) and so all the sadness he has, he pays it with her daughter. T-Ray is a very ignorant person.
When Lilly oppened a book he always have a mean comment to say to her like "Who do you think you are, Julius Shakespeare?"
Obviously Julius is not his first name.
    He is a mean person

  30. I think T ray is a very mean and gurmpy man. This might be because he lost his wife and became a single parent who had to raise his daughter alone. He is also very mean to lily.
